This Ohio region got its name from the abundance of salt licks that were found in the area when the county was founded on January 30, 1808. It is part of the Columbus Metropolitan Statistical Area and as of 2010 had a population of 166,492.

High school sports have been popular in Licking County for many years. The Ohio state title for high school baseball has been won by Licking County High School every year since 2002. That same year two other Licking County schools won state titles, Newark Catholic High School and Heath High School.
